As most IT Professionals know, Microsoft have a range of certification tracks each with their own set of exams both compulsory and elective. These are tested using a computer based series of questions and tasks with an overall expected score percentage in order to pass. Those that pass get to add another exam to their CV.
This particular book book is for the Microsoft Windows XP Professional exam number 70-270 and follows the tried and trusted Exam Cram format. Whereas many IT books are big heavy lap crushers, the Exam Cram series are far more sensibly sized and not much bigger than a typical paper back novel. However, within the covers is everything you need to know to pass the 70-270 exam.
The book is broken up in to logical sections with each containing tight clear explanations. These are littered with marked areas with Caution, Alert, Tip, Note and usefully, SP2. These cover important nuggets you really need to be sure you know. The specific pointing out of SP2 information is particularly welcome.
Each section finishes with a small exam covering what you have just learned. Obviously a few questions can't be a fair guide of your readiness for the exam but they still serve as a useful indicator as to how much has sunk in.
Once you have finished the book (and ideally, read it again, if you're anything like me, you can use the test exams provided on CD. These contain a large number of randomised questions and give a far better clue as to how ready you are for the test.
Conclusion
This is another fine book from the Exam Cram series and can be confidently recommended for anyone preparing for the 70-270 Windows XP Pro exam. Even those who just want to learn more about XP would find this a useful resource as it covers a lot of ground and includes information on further reading if you want more information on any given topic. At the price, you can't go far wrong.
